Rex Johnston and Barbara BentleyBarbara and Rex produce wines which include Bordeaux blends, Syrah and Port. In 2001, they ventured in producing white and berry wines. In 1965, Rex began making assorted wines from fruit, flowers, and vegetables (including rhubarb with lots of sugar). The 1967 (34 year old) dandelion wine won two bronzes last year. When picking Zinfandel seconds in the 70's, Rex thought he had died and gone to heaven when he found 5 unpicked vines - "Eureka"!
Rex will make wine out of almost anything, so be careful not to stand too close to him! It doesn't matter what he picks, the wine seems to come out a winner. And just to make life a little more interesting, Barbara gets into the act with her non-traditional tasting critique - too much oak becomes, "it tastes like a piece of wood." Then there are the labels. Barbara enjoys the challenge of transferring Rex's vintages into charming award winning labels. In 2002, she received two golds at the Orange County Fair and two golds at the California State Fair. Then, kazoom - she won the Best of Show at the California State Fair.
